We're Prepared To Pay The Price Of Freedom, Are You?

We're finding it hard to keep track of all those wanting to join us. We really do appreciate the support and you look like a fine bunch of potential cell mates.

For those who wish to add their name to the ever growing list, we are no longer adding sites via the comments or trackbacks.

From now on, to sign up, please use the following link:

I wish to add my site to the list of those who will publish the "al-Jazeera Memo" should it leak out.

We'll try to work with our friends at Don't Bomb Us so you all get the recognition you deserve.
The internet can be a great tool for openness, transparency and democracy, and you're all playing your part. Thanks for your support.

After Blair's threat to jail any editor who reports the Bomb Al-Jazeera memo, we thought there would be an outcry. Who would stand up for press freedom, or at least the freedom not to be bombed to buggery?

One man has come out fighting. Boris Johnson:

The Attorney General's ban is ridiculous, untenable, and redolent of guilt. I do not like people to break the Official Secrets Act, and, as it happens, I would not object to the continued prosecution of those who are alleged to have broken it. But we now have allegations of such severity, against the US President and his motives, that we need to clear them up.

If someone passes me the document within the next few days I will be very happy to publish it in The Spectator, and risk a jail sentence. The public need to judge for themselves. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. If we suppress the truth, we forget what we are fighting for, and in an important respect we become as sick and as bad as our enemies.

We're with you Boris. Here's the deal. If you get it, send it to us and we will also publish it. We will also risk jail.

Would any other bloggers like to join us in this pledge? Please let us know by email if you're with us.

and Dave Hansell and Nick who are prepared to hand copies out in the street!

Update: Peter Kilfoyle has just put down two Early Day Motions in Parliament. As usual it will be interesting to see who signs up for them:

EDM 1084
That this House notes recent reports that President Bush discussed with the Prime Minister the bombing of the al-Jazeera television station in Qatar; and calls on the Government to publish the record of this discussion.

That this House is appalled by the reported comments of President Bush to Prime Minister Blair that he wished to bomb Al-Jazeera headquarters in Qatar; is further concerned by the failure of the United Kingdom to restrain the American assault on Fallujah; and calls on the Government to publish the record of the conversation of President Bush and Prime Minister Blair held in April 2004, where these matters were discussed.

Latest from Downing St Says:

Put to the Official Spokesman that a senior executive of Al Jazeera was looking to meet with the Prime Minister when he came to London next week, would the Prime Minister be willing to meet him and did he have a comment about Peter Kilfoyle's Early Day Motion, the PMOS said he was not aware of the EDM. It was also, he suspected, the first that Downing Street had heard about the request from Al Jazeera. It was somewhat short notice. That said the Government was quite happy to talk to Al Jazeera just as they were quite happy to talk to other broadcasters. In terms of who talked to them that would depend on who was available and how much time was given to set up a meeting. Asked if the Government, in relation to the EDM, would be willing to disclose the memo if Parliament put pressure on it to do so, the PMOS said that people needed to take notw of the fact that this was something that was sub-judice.

Yeah, right, he can't disclose it because of his decision to prosecute. You can't win Tony. It will come out and you won't be able to prosecute all of us.

Please Note that we are continuing to research this and the question we are asking in our latest post is are there two memos?

In addition we're going to have to stop adding people to the bloggers list above at some point, we hope you understand when that happens.

I'm with you on this one -

I'm with you on this one - I'll publish to my site & take the risk of incarceration for the sake of freedom.

i'm not that well-known for my political views as i often get confused but this is down-right outrageous. i believe in democracy [cough, splutter, choke] and if i can get hold of a copy of that memo, then it'll go up on my blog.

A possibility is one memo

A possibility is one memo leaked in two parts...

I don't know the answer.

But however many documents there are, there must be something interesting in them that hasn't come out yet, or why the gagging order?

Are the precise terms of the gagging order/letter from Goldsmith or however they do it known? That would give a clue. Or are they subject to gagging too?

One other thing that has puzzled me is that Bush has just dismissed the Mirror story as "outlandish" even as Blair is having a crackdown on the story. That was strange when Bush said it, but there seems to have been no attempt by Bush and Blair to get into line with each other since - they have had a bit of time now...

All very odd.

Yes, count me in.

Yes, count me in. Publication of this memo may spell the end for at least one of the two regimes. It will be an honour to a stretch for that.

Now, while I would like to see Tony Blair replaced with George Galloway, I would settle for Boris Johnson if that weren't possible...

Hmmm...before I make any rash promises, can someone explain exactly what length of jail time we're talking about? Maximum or minimum security? What sort of food do they serve, will I have access to the internet, a well-stocked library, BBC Radio 4, etc?

Also, what effect will my US citizenship have? Will I be jailed near foreign nationals who foment terror and look at me scary? Or will I simply be deported, which I'm not willing to risk--they'd detain me back in the USA, I'm pretty sure, or possibly send me to Gitmo. Although maybe I can claim asylum, or else be deported to Greece or somewhere sunny.

I'll definitely have to think about it.
