Actually, it makes sense from another point of view as well. Tony's Middle East Envoy does a bit of helping the police with their enquiries, and as Tony might well end up doing that himself, there's continuity and tidiness here...

It makes sense because he does what he's told.

It looks like there is going to be a by-election in Sedgefield. I wonder who'll end up with that seat.

I dont think toni will survive 2yrs out there he will be a prime target as for northern ireland that was easy he just caved on everything hardly a difficult tactic.

And of course, Israel has no extradition treaty with most countries, including the UK.

This is great news  for Israel, although I doubt the Palestinian people will be as happy. Tony is a member of Labour Friends of Israel, a Zionist lobby group within the party.

Pilger provides further insight into how the Israeli occupation is kept liquid:

The Blair government has also backed the Israeli military-industrial complex by buying bullets, bombs, grenades and anti-tank missiles. The Metropolitan Police and the South Wales police buy Israeli ammunition. An Israeli combat aircraft training system was bought by the RAF. In 1999, a joint UK-Israeli high-technology investment fund was established to pump funds into joint research and development.[33]

No doubt Blair will state he is doing-what-he-thinks-is-right, whilst knifing any kind of natural justice in the region.

Nothing that man is involved in will ever be free of the taint of the dead of Iraq. I have to say that I feel you`re being far too generous towards him; I mean, could we imagine after WW2 any senior leader of the Nazi government being given a job by the Allies to undertake a peace mission anywhere in the world?

(Although the US did, of course, take on board a bunch of ex-Nazis to work in their intelligence operations)

The name Blair will forever reside in my personal lexicon alongside such words as Mengele, Thatcher and root-canal operation. He has been a disastrous prime minister; what do you think Blair would have done in 1940 if he had been PM rather than Churchill? Probably invaded France along with Hitler. I realise that I`m ranting hysterically but really, there is a time and a place for it and that is now - I provide this polemical screech as a public service antidote to the suffocating waves of verbal diahorrea which will issue forth from the nation`s TVs for the rest of the week.

And for those who share this razorish view of Blair et al, I urge you to tune in to Dr Who on Saturday, just to see the revived Master (who has taken over the world in the guise of a demented, grinning UK Prime Minister) get his comeuppance. Its vicarious, I know, but still a hoot!

You can't be serious? Everything he has done regarding the M.E. has been in the other direction, sabotaging peace prospects, except the peace of the graveyard. It's no good "knowing" something if you refuse to act on that knowledge, and instead do the exact opposite.

Haven't you noticed what 's been happening in Iraq for the last four years? The hundreds of thousands dead, the millions of refugees? How bad does it have to get before you can grasp that Iraq has already exploded?

I'm with Ron F. When I first read Quarsan's post, I thought it was a p*`^ take.

The word envoy means accredited diplomat. Who in the Middle East has asked for another diplomat assigned by the US. I thought that was the job of condescending Rice?

Which country is the 'envoy' going to represent?

Apart from Israel and the puppets in the West Bank and Lebanon, who is going to believe he can deal impartially with both sides.

It's hard to think of a job that Blair is less suited to, but then he always seems to land butter-side up. I still hope he gets his collar felt by Inspector Yates, thus making him a potential 'tourist' in the eyes of the US administration...

RonF, Blair has repeatedly stated that he believes that problems in the M.E. can't be solved unless there is a solution to the Palestinan issue. He has also repeatedly stated his belief in a two-state solution. Practically the only concession he has got from the White House is Bush's declaration in favour of the two-state solution.

If you look through our archives you will see that we've been tracking Iraq for a long time. what I mean by explode is an all-out civil war. This may happen and if it did it would derail Tony's attempt to be a peacemaker.

Bernie1, Blair will be an envoy on behalf of the Quartet - the US, Russia, the EU and the UN. Now that Blair isn't PM he isn't as beholden to Bush as he once was, indeed, Bush is now also on the way out. As I said, I think this is part of a wider strategy for him and I do believe that there are better qualified candidates for being an envoy

Sheer hypocracy.  A thief who lied and went to war to rob a nation from its wealth,  killed thousands in due course.  Should be tried as a war criminal but instead gets the role of peace maker.  Mr Blairs true role will be to assisst the pupet government of Mehmood Abbas in convincing the Palestinians to accept occupation  whilest writing the so famouse legacy that he has always wanted.  Hypocracy that disgusts me beyond words.

Blair has lied to them repeatedly, and there is plenty of evidence of this is Hansard, if you compare with the facts.

Yet they all stood and gave him a standing ovation. Like followers of a totalitarian dictator? Gordon Brown now has inherited an authoritarian state, which looks after its own and to hell with the people. He should follow Cromwell's example and sack parliament... But he is a product of the system; MPs put him where he is today... so he'll go along with it.

I`m actually looking forward to TB`s memoirs and here`s why; Iain Banks, the topnotch SF writer (yeah, I know he writes mainstream, but much of it is tame in comparison to the Culture stories) once upon a time subjected a copy of L Ron Hubbard`s book, `Dianetics`, to being despatched by firing squad, ie IB shot it thoroughly with a .22 rifle. Later on, some other SF writers had a go, one actually taking a chainsaw to a copy of Dianetics with spectacular ripped up results.

Now, I know some reading this would instinctively resist the urge to rain destruction down upon a book, but I would argue that the Blair Memoirs represent a special case. Indeed, the only restriction I would place on such a scheme of planned book demolition is that we should buy it from a branch of Books Etc or some equivalent. No sense in a larger than necessary outlay of moolah!

Bliar has always talked a good game.  However on the Palestine issue he has actually delivered zilch. Here is a well written article on why he is unfit to be a middle eastern envoy, which refers to all its sources. (If I was writing it, I would say why he unfit for anything except a spot behind bars)
